Benjamin Franklin was an American writer, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, printer, publisher, and political philosopher.

Franklin was one of the leading intellectuals of his time and is considered one of the founding fathers of the United States of America. He helped draft the Declaration of Independence and was one of its signers, represented the United States in France during the American Revolution, and was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention.

Benjamin Franklin was born as the 10th son of 17 children to his parents. He learned to read very early and spent one year in grammar school and another under a private teacher, but his formal education ended at age 10.

Benjamin Franklin made important scientific contributions regarding the nature of electricity. Among his conclusions was the fact that positive and negative charge, or the state of electrification, of bodies, must be in exactly equal amounts—an important scientific principle known today as the law of conservation of charge.
