He was born on June 18, 1988, in Columbus, Ohio to Laura Lee Dun, a hospice social worker, and William Earl Dun, a physical therapy assistant. He has two sisters and a brother. His great-great-great-grandparents were Edwin Dun, an American rancher who worked as an agricultural advisor to Japan, and his Japanese wife Tsuru.
Josh developed an interest in music from a young age and taught himself how to play drums by imitating the beats of the records he bought at a local music store. His parents set strict rules on what music he could listen to, so he would hide albums like Green Day’s Dookie under his bed. He also took trumpet lessons at school but did not enjoy them.
Josh worked at Guitar Center for three years, where he met former Twenty-One Pilots drummer Chris Salih, who introduced him to future bandmate Tyler Joseph. In 2010, he joined House of Heroes as a temporary drummer while their original drummer Colin Rigsby took a break to spend time with his family.
